Exosomes and microvesicles represent a novel biological mechanism of communication between cells and tissues in the human body. Although interest in these biological cargo ships has been increasing dramatically over the past few years, little is known about their lipidomic architecture that provides them with their unique function in biology. BERG and UMASS School of Medicine (Program for Molecular Medicine and the RNA Institute) teamed up to develop novel analytical techniques to characterize the lipidome and proteome of unique exosomes and microvesicles isolated from different cell types. Exosomes and microvesicles represent a new frontier for biological drug delivery carriers and OMIC information gained from this collaboration provide a more comprehensive view of these miniature transport depots.
