Organisms are composed of multiple cellular and intracellular membranes, which have a unique lipid structure associated with each membranes role in biological function. BERG collaborated with Dr. Christos Chinopoulos from Semmelweis University in Hungary to characterize the cellular, mitochondrial, and submitochondrial (mitoplast) lipidomic composition in brine shrimp, which represent a unique physiologic and metabolic organism. These shrimp have unique membrane structure that allows them to handle high salt concentrations, become dormant, and react to their environment. This adaption likely resides in the unique structure and function in cellular and mitochondrial lipidome which serves as the gate keepers of salt balance, metabolism, and membrane permeability. Using a MS/MSALL shotgun lipidomic approach, BERG was able to shed light upon the complexity of subcellular membranes associated with unique biological functions.
